ASIStudio

What’s ASIStudio?

ASIStudio is an astronomy software package developed by ZWO, which currently including ASICap, ASIImg and ASILive.

  • ASICap——specialized in planetary imaging, with an earlier release date, has experienced multiple iterations and gains a lot of popularity.
  • ASIImg —— specialized in DSO imaging for desktop platform, is a great attempt to create a software by our years’ experience on development.
  • ASILive—— specialized in live stacking. The first beta version was released at Nov 2019, is a strong competitor in live stacking software, also get many good reputations.

With this software, the future of ASIStudio is quite clear: ASIStudio will be a unified software package including all the imaging and post-processing work. Combined with popular ASI camera, a full-featured ecosystem for astrophotography will be built.

You don’t need to learn other complexity software, ASIStudio will be enough for you.

ASICap

ASICap is the first software in this collection, can be used for planetary, solar and lunar imaging. The UI is quite straightforward, you could easily adjust parameters, such as resolution, exposure time and gain. The software won’t let you miss a single clear night to take images.

ASIImg

ASIImg is the latest software in this collection. Currently could be used for DSO imaging with/without scheduled task. We plan to add sky chart, assist polar align, focusing and plate-solving in future versions in this year. Ultimately, it’s gonna meet all the demands for DSO imaging.

The development progress of ASIImg is steady, thanks to the experience for developing ASIAIR.

ASILive

ASILive is focused on live stacking. You could see the image stacked in real time with stretch and denoise automatically. A no-brainer experience for imaging.

Surprisingly, due to the convenient and easy to use of the software, ASILive has drawed attention from the fans of EAA.

What can ASIStudio bring us:

As a newborn software platform, ASIStudio is far from its ultimate goal. There are already many mature software, such as FireCapture, SharpCap, Maxim DL and NINA. You will be impressed if you are specializing some of these software.

But ASIStudio has its own advantages:

1.Completely complimentary

Like earlier software developed by ZWO, ASIStudio is also complimentary. You can download the software from any appropriate platform. Although ASIStudio only supports ASI camera, but we think most astronomy amateurs have at least one ASI camera. So, it is not a disadvantage.

2.Better support for ASI cameras

ASIStudio will be more robust because we focused on support our own cameras.

3.Easier learning curve

There are all kinds of astronomy imaging software, but most have a quite steep learning curve. ASIStudio is more user friendly because it has a simple, intuitive UI and more convenient operations.

4.More specialized software

Instead of integrating planetary/Solar/Lunar imaging, DSO imaging and Live stacking in one software, ASIStudio separates them into 3 individuals which can run independently: ASICap, ASIImg and ASILive. Some new features are under development, such as FITS viewer, will also been added as a gadget. This means you don’t need to download the entire software package for just a single feature (For example, purchase and download Maxim DL to view a FITS file). More flexibility for customers to imaging and post-processing.

5.Cross platform support

ASIStudio currently supports Windows 32-bit/64-bit, macOS, Linux (64-bit only). A great news for Linux and macOS customers.

The future of ASIStudio

ASIStudio is a long-term software project for desktop platform. We will keep shaping the software and add more features over time. We also keep a close eye on other great astronomy software, we may integrate it into our package after received their authorizations.

ASIStudio will become a full-featured, one-stop astrophotography software package, including the software developed by ourselves, gadgets and authorized third party software. ASIStudio will become the best solution for astronomy amateurs. We will make the astrophotography easier than never before.

When we start developing ASIStudio, someone told to us, we will never catch up the pace with software like SharpCap. Even some of our competitors stop developing similar software, as they think it is a totally waste of time. We know we have a vast gap from mature software, but it’s just a beginning.

As proven said: “Rome wasn’t built in a day”. A software project cannot become perfect from in a short time. We will never catch up the pace with others if we afraid of facing the failure. ZWO is working hard on astrophotography for 8 years, we will never give up.

The “Save As” feature in the ASIFitsView application is very clunky. It does not allow me to save in folders other than the current folder where the images are saved. Also, the default file name should update as I move between images in the folder and not default to the first image that I opened. The file type drop down should list jpg and png separately and add .png or .jpg automatically so that I don’t have to manually type the extension.

      1. Images can be saved to any files on your computers.
      2. The filename will be updated.
      3. We will add more formats in the future and they will be listed.
      4. Could you tell us which version of ASiStudio are you using and what system are you using? You can send us an email to support@zwoptical.com for tech help.

i just bought a new laptop with 4k screen, and there is no scaling in asistudio, it means icons and texts are almost unreadable. it can be a good idea to have a scaling option to adapt the software to high resolution screen . thanks for this great software

    Hi everyone,

    I have ZWO ASI224MC.
I finished the pre-test check during the day and was capturing the full
moon in the evening when I ran into a problem and got an image.
It’s hard to proceed with the image capture.

A few days ago, I set a ground target for my laptop with the previous
    version of ASI Stuido V1.0.1
WIN10, 64bit . The image capture went well and saved as expected.

And the same laptop with ASI224MC to shoot the full door next evening.
I ran ASICap after I ran it, but my laptop only has a black screen and no
    moon surface.
I checked the connection configuration with the laptop and ASI224MC
and even double-checked it, but the laptop is still a black screen.

I checked the connectivity between the laptop and ASI224MC, and even
if I touch this and that, the laptop is still on the black screen.
When the camera is separated from the ceiling mirror and facing around,
the screen of the laptop reacts white.
Is it out of focus? I just couldn’t figure out why.
Please let me know the cause and solution.

And yesterday, ASICap screen looks like attached picture, and it doesn’t
    go back to full screen.
Touch and run the ASIImg icon next to it to display the full screen immediately.
What is the reason for this? solution method Please let me know.

What changed a few days ago was that the pop-up was upgraded to the
latest version of V1.1.2 (64bit) when ASI Studio ran pop-up.

    Thanks,

    N.S.Kim

I tried ASIlive, but I’ve got Az mount and it looks like to me the images where not aligned correcting field rotation. Does ASIlive corrects for field rotation? if not are you planning to add the feature? Thanks!

Just opened ASI studio for the first time on my PC and connected a cooled ZWO camera. I’m wondering how you can determine the current temperature of the sensor so that you know the camera is ready for imaging?

Excellent approach to development. Nice to have a piece of software that does not try to be everything to everyone. Please keep up the good work – Great for ZWO sales

Today I downloaded ASIStudio from you website and tried to install it on my MACBook, but received an error message saying it would not install for security reasons as it came from an unknown website and directed me to the Apple App Store, which, of course, does not have this. Do you plan on distributing it through the App Store or at least give Apple your credentials so they know you’re not a hacker!

Just wondering…. there’s no manual for ASICAP or ASISTUDIO either? I have just bought an ASI mini camera and the quick guide says I should find a manual for the imaging software somewhere…
    Thank you

One feature I noticed in SharpCap is the ability for the histogram to include only a portion of the image. Is this option considered for Studio or ASIAir? Even histograms of several areas might be useful. It’s the first I’ve heard of this feature, but it seems to me that it could be very useful. I’m interested in others thoughts.

When I use de deep sky mode (img) it says the cooler is off. In Asicap (planetary) mode, I can switch on the cooler ON and set the temperature. In DSO mode there is a setting for temperature, but the cooler is OFF? Any method to have the cooler ON in deep sky mode?
    Thanks!

    Love ASI cameras!

I like to format of ASIStudio. I see there is live stacking. So will there be image stacking post processing for planetary images in the future like autostakkert and Registax? They haven’t been updated in a long time.

I’m enjoying ASI Studio a lot. Very elegant design.

Is it possible to autoguide in the Deep Sky and Stacking modes? I only see the guiding icon in the ASIcap mode.

P.S. I have my 183MC and my 290mini. Now, when is that ASIair Pro going to arrive (ordered April 1)…?

Sorry it can’t autoguide in the Deep Sky and Stacking modes at present. We still need third party guiding software. But our devs are considering to put this feature in ASIStudio.
Could you tell me where did you buy the AIR PRO? And the order number? We will arrange the delivers as soon as possible.

    Hi,

the new ASILive works very well and I’m very happy with it but the live stacked result is sometimes too greenish in my light polluted environment. How can I adjust the color in this tool?

    Thanks Martin

    Hello,
I am totally new to this astro game. Today I will take receipt of 2 asi cameras.
I have downloaded the asi studio software and have been looking through it.

I have great difficulty reading the red on the black. I know why its red, but wonder can it be changed within the program to a different contrast. At present my eyes cannot read it.

    Thanks
    Rikki

After downloading ASIstudio I was very pleased and surprised by the ease and functionality of the software. As a user of several of the popular imaging and stacking systems this one validates my skills as a deep sky imager and takes much of the work out of getting really good images. As I have read that you plan to integrate a star chart and other features that only work with AS I cameras is not a disadvantage. In fact it is a plus and thus far ZWO is a proven leader in this field of work/hobby. Keep up the great work.
