ASI071MC Pro

Camera Sensor

▶IMX071

The ASI071MC Pro is a popular OSC camera based on the highly appreciated sensor from Sony – the IMX071 –  in APS-C format. A good set of specifications combined with a good price makes it a great choice for those who want to take the step from DSLR to a dedicated astronomy camera. Some of the highlights include:

  • APS-C format (28.4 mm diagonal) with 4.78 um pixel size – ideal for many types of telescopes
  • 14-bit ADC– giving high dynamic range of 14 stops
  • A high 46ke- full well capacity – helping to reduce the issue of for example saturated stars
  • 16-megapixel sensor with 4944*3284pixels – plenty of detail can be captured in high resolution
  • Electronic shutter– no vibration problems compared to a mechanical shutter
  • Very low read noise of 2.3 e-at 24 dB gain – bringing out more details in your images with improved dynamic range

If you are looking for an APS-C type OSC camera for astrophotography, you can’t go wrong with the ASI071MC Pro. It will provide low read noise and a high dynamic range.

DDR Memory Buffer

ASI071MC Pro camera includes a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer to help improve data transfer reliability. Additionally, the use of a memory buffer minimizes amp-glow, which is caused by the slow transfer speeds when the camera is used with a USB 2.0 port.

DDR memory buffer is the main difference between ASI “Cool” and “Pro” cameras.

Astrophotography Performance

ASI071MC Pro offers very good performance for astrophotography. Low read noise, high dynamic range.

Dark Current

The Dark Current of ASI071MC Pro is better controlled than before with the help of  a DDR buffer and new improved hardware design.

Please check this 300s dark frame free of amp-glow: Here

Unique Tilt Adapter

ASI071 Pro includes unique tilt adapter. Say goodbye to tilt problems forever !

USB 3.0 Port & USB2.0 HUB

USB 3.0 Port: Provide 5Gb bandwidth to make it possible for ASI071MC Pro to run at 10 fps (14bit, normal mode) at full resolution(16Mega).

USB 2.0 HUB: Can connect with various accessories,  including a filter wheel, guide camera or electronic focuser, allowing you to manage your cables better. There are two short 0.5m USB2.0 cables included with the ASI071 Pro. The hub is powered by the external power supply if you connect one.

New mechnical design and Anti-Dew Heater

The ASI071MC-PRO camera comes with a completely upgraded anti-dew and mechanical body.

The diameter of the camera body is increased to 86mm compared to the ASI071MC Cool (78mm).

▶6 screws seal the chamber

This new structure seal the CMOS chamber better.

▶Anti-dew and cooling system

Thanks to the two-stage TEC cooling, ASI071MC Pro can lower the CMOS sensor temperature to more than 35-40 degrees Celsius below ambient temperature, which can greatly reduce dark current generation and sensor noise even during extended exposure times.

*The Delta T 35-40℃ is tested at 30℃ ambient temperature. It might get down when the cooling system is working for a long time. Also, as the ambient temperature falls, the Delta T would also decrease.
Please notice that the camera needs to be connected to an external 11-15v power supply to implement the cooling function. We recommend you use 12V@3A DC adapter (5.5*2.1mm, center pole positive) or lithium battery with 11-15V to power the camera. If you don’t have one, please click here to buy a 12V power adapter. There are 4 different standards for different countries, please make sure you selected the correct adapter when placing the order.

The anti-dew heater will heat the AR protect window to avoid any dew problems. The heat anti-dew heater power is around 3.6W and can be turn off in software to save power.

You should put in the focal length of the telescope, not the camera.

Hello, I tried to get the ASI 071 set up last night but had major issues with focusing. The image of the stars appeared as donuts and nothing that I seemed to do would correct the problem. The setup includes a moonlite focuser before the OAG (asi 120mm mini is attached to the OAG). Both the guide camera and the 071 were not focused properly. Guide camera could not lock on any star and the image on the guide screen was totally pixilated. I think the problem has something to do with the focal length I am inputting for the setup (I dont think I am inputting the correct focal length for the 071 or the 120mm at setup). I’m not sure if the moonlite focuser is effecting focal length. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sam,

Over the past 2 years, I have purchased 2 of these ASI071MC-Pro cameras, 2 of the ASI1600MM-Pro cameras, 1 of the ASI1600MC-Cool camera, 1 of the ASI120MC camera, 1 of the ASI120MM camera, 1 of the ASI224MC camera, 2 of the ASI174MM-mini cameras, 1 of the ASI174MM camera and 10 of the ASI120MM-mini cameras. So, I expect a good custoer as myself to receive a prompt and positive response to my present request (something I have NOT received from you in the past to other requests, included a no-response to my month-old question of the dark current for the ASI120MM-mini):

As both of my ASI071MC-Pro cameras (as well as my friend’s ASI071MC-Pro camera, and those of many other customers who have indicated this problem online here) have a systemic problem with ice crystal formation, I need a convenient way to recharge the internal dessicant tablets (in other words, without opening up the front of the camera). I would like to use the “backup dessicant tube, as indicated in the instruction manual, however neither of my ASI071MC-Pro’s came with this accessory included. Nor is this listed as an accessory availlable for purchase. Therefore, please send me 2 of these tubes, to the following address:

    Michael Hettrick
    3231 Monument Way
    Unit #E
    Concord, CA 94518
    USA

    Thank you,
    Mike
P.S. Yes, I am also employing other possible “fixes” to this problem, including cooling down the chip slowly and turning on the window dew heater. However, these chambers are obviously not sealed properly, so the dessicant also needs to be frequently recharged.

Hi ZWO, I purchased the ASI071MC-PRO and I take a dark library now at unitygain/-10°C. What I observe is that the temperature of the senor is fluctuating, so 1/8th of the frames come in at -9.4°C and 7/8th frames come in at -10°C. Cooling is at 57% and the antidew feature is turned on.
    Something to worry about?

    Thank you for the advice…

    2. adaptor and other hardware: i’m using a Tak FSQ85 and a WO Zenithstar 61, is there any extra adaptor i need to have ASI071 to work with my setup?

We have drivers and suitable thridpart softwares for Mac. I think Nebulosity is good for you. INDI and INDI library need to be installed. We get all links of them on our website. https://astronomy-imaging-camera.com/software-drivers
ASI071 have 2″/M42/M48 adapters, so I think it can works with your telescope without any extra adapters.
