The ASI1600MM Pro is one of the most popular cameras from ZWO. It has gained a reputation as a fantastic camera if you want to get serious about your astrophotography. Some of the highlights include:

DDR Memory Buffer

DDR memory buffer is the main difference between ASI “Cool” and “Pro” cameras.

ASI1600MM Pro camera includes a 256MB DDR3 memory buffer to help improve data transfer reliability. Additionally, the use of a memory buffer minimizes amp-glow, which is caused by the slow transfer speeds when the camera is used with a USB 2.0 port.

Reliable Mechanical Structures

There are four screws that seal the sensor chamber. Our camera design has been extensively tested and is very stable.

Even when used in higher humidity environments, ASI1600 Pro will still work fine without dew problems.

USB 3.0 Port: Provides 5Gb bandwidth to make it possible for ASI1600 Pro to run at 14.7 fps (12bit, normal mode) or 23 fps (10bit, high speed mode) at full resolution (16Mega).
USB 2.0 HUB: Can connect with various accessories,  including a filter wheel, guide camera or electronic focuser, allowing you to manage your cables better. There are two short 0.5m USB2.0 cables included with the ASI1600 Pro. The hub is powered by the external power supply if you connect one.

Cooling System

Thanks to the two-stage TEC cooling, ASI1600MM Pro can lower the CMOS sensor temperature to more than 40-45 degrees Celsius below ambient temperature, which can greatly reduce dark current generation and sensor noise even during extended exposure times.

*The Delta T 40-45℃ is tested at 30℃ ambient temperature. It might get down when the cooling system is working for a long time. Also, as the ambient temperature falls, the Delta T would also decrease. 
Please notice that the camera needs to be connected to an external 11-15v power supply to implement the cooling function. We recommend you use 12V@3A DC adapter (5.5*2.1mm, center pole positive) or lithium battery with 11-15V to power the camera. If you don’t have one, please click here to buy a 12V power adapter. There are 4 different standards for different countries, please make sure you selected the correct adapter when placing the order.

Warranty and Return Policy

1. ZWO will provide a 2-year free warranty service (Warranty Period) for ZWO products purchased by Users from ZWO (“Products”) in accordance with this Policy, commencing on the day following receipt of the Products by Users. For ASIAIR Plus users, commencing on the day of device activation.

2. If a User encounters the following Dead on Arrival (DOA) and contacts ZWO within the corresponding time limit to issue the Product purchase invoice and relevant evidence, ZWO will provide door-to-door pick-up service and, as appropriate, after-sale replacement (or partial replacement), repair or return (or partial return) service for the following Products:
1) Product quality problem
Provided that a User detects a quality problem and contacts ZWO within 30 days after receipt of the Products, and ZWO support team confirms that the Products indeed have a quality problem or defect after their inspection, ZWO will provide free replacement service towards such Products;
2) Product transportation problem
Provided that a User finds obvious signs of bubbling, serious overstocking, or deformation on the outer package of the Products upon receipt of the Products, and provides ZWO with pictures of the outer package and proof of receipt within 3 days after receipt of such Products, ZWO support team will verify the actual shipper and determine the responsible party for such transportation problem. In the event that ZWO is the actual shipper, ZWO will be responsible for providing the relevant return or replacement service, however, if the Products are directly sold or transported to the User by an agent of ZWO, the agent will be responsible for providing the relevant return or replacement service.

3. If the Products are under the following circumstances, they are not within the scope of warranty service, ZWO may provide maintenance services to the Users:
1) The Warranty Period of the Products has expired; or
2) The Products are injected into liquid or affected by moisture or corrosion; or
3) The Products are damaged by an external force (such as the broken of the camera protection window glass, the deformation of the product shell, the broken of the USB port, etc.); or
4) Disassembling, repairing by a third party, refurbishment of the Products (such as downloading erroneous firmware) without the written authorization of ZWO; or
5) The product system is modified, or the maintenance notice is lost or changed; or
6) Product quality problem caused by installation not following the requirements or instructions for the Products; or
7) Physical damage or failure of the Products caused by the force majeure (such as strong vibration or extrusion such as flood, fire, earthquake, or thunder stroke); or
8)Damage caused by the improper User operation during the period of shooting or use, such as using without the equipment protection or direct shooting of the sun; or
9) No valid purchase invoice or warranty certificate; or
10) The Products are second-hand products.
Any quality problem with the accessories or other parts of the Products is not a condition for the return or change of the Products, and the User may solely request to replace the accessories with new ones, which shall be handled after verification by ZWO support team.
If the issue with your ZWO product was caused by certain damage (such as severe damage not covered by the 2-year warranty), you might have to pay the replacement value.

4. For the normal repair or replacement of the Products during the Warranty Period, the User will bear the return cost. When returning the Products, Users shall specify the actual reasons for the damage to the Products, and shall provide the corresponding valid certificates, such as pictures or videos, etc.
For the Products that need to be replaced after being confirmed by ZWO in writing, the User shall return the Products with the complete package, together with all accessories, manuals, etc., to the address designated by ZWO.
By sending back the product to ZWO, the User agrees to pay out-of-warranty fees that may arise during the repair process of the product. ZWO will send back the product after charging.

5. If a User encounters any problem during the use of ZWO Products, you may at any time contact ZWO for technical support via ZWO Support.

For the Products that need to be returned for after-sales service, ZWO will provide the corresponding RMA code for reference.
ZWO will not accept any products having no RMA code that have been returned privately without ZWO written confirmation.

6. If a User purchases the ZWO Products from a ZWO agent, the User may contact the ZWO agent directly for the relevant after-sales service.

    Hi Sam
    I am using ASI1600MM-Cool and APT for capturing. You have mentioned here above that 2×2 hardware bin is available. How do I choose between hardware and software bin in APT? Furthermore, does this also mean that the rest of the binning options, 3×3 and 4×4, are all software bins only?
    Another thing is, I realized on your charts that using the camera at lowest readout option, gain 200, the full well capacity is only about 2000e. How does 2×2 hardware binning would effect the sensors full well capacity?

      software binning is the best way for DSO imaging
      so there is no option to set hardware binning in APT

      if you use software binning, the full well become 8000e
      but hardware binning won’t

    I’m thinking of buying either a 1600MM-Cool to replace my faulty CCD camera. I currently use an ASI120MM (USB2) guide camera. I know the 120MM has problems with most USB hubs but will it work with those built into the 1600?

      the power of USB3.0 is 1A, the camera itself need around 400ma, so there is around 600ma to power guide camera and EFW

    Thanks Mr. Sam Wen for the reply. The power supply was the one I used to power my satellite TV receiver which can supply only up to 2A. That is all I have at the moment. (I have already ordered a good quality 5A power supply which is on the way and will take another 1 – 2 weeks to arrive). I noticed another thing. When that cooling failure happens the power indicator LED on the camera started to blink rapidly. Anyway this problem only occurs when cooler power rises above 95% and I also now think it should be due to inadequate amperage of the power supply. However, still I am happy that the cooling unit performs even better than you have promised. That means it can keep the sensor temperature little more than 45 degrees lower than the ambient temperature.

      you are correct the power supply is not enough if the LED blink
      some DC power adapter declare that can provide 2A but usually can only provide 1.5 or 1.8A
      anyway, you just need 0.5A to cool to 30 degree below ambient and 1A to 38 or 40 degree
      so just avoid to cool so deep

    Today, I experienced a strange problem with my newly purchased ASI1600MM-C. I was taking a 360S dark frame and cooler was set at -15C and was running at 99% power. The ambient temperature was about 31C. I noticed that that cooler was struggling to keep the sensor temperature at around -14.5C and suddenly cooling stopped and sensor temperature start to rise rapidly. But sequence generator pro continued to show that cooler is running at 100%. Then I turned the cooler power off, disconnected the camera from computer and reconnected it after about a minute. Then cooling worked again. I want to know whether this is a inbuilt hardware level safety mechanism to prevent too much overloading of the cooler or a fault in cooler. I am quite worried whether I am going to loose my new camera. Please respond.

      can you check your DC power supply? can it provide enough power?
      I suggest you set the target temperature to -10 instead of -15 to reach the max delta temperature it can achieve

    Good morning.
    I recently bought the CCD ASI 1600Mono Cooled and I am facing a problem that worries me.
    At the beginning of the shooting sessions, using MaximDL to control the camera, I set it normally at -20 degrees. I wait for the temperature to reach the point -20 and start shooting, but in the first images, condensation is already present on the inside of the camera, on the sensor.
    It is important to remember that always at the end of the session I use Warm-Up so that there is no thermal shock, but I’m having several sessions ruined by this problem. What can I do to prevent this?
    Is there something I’m doing wrong?
    Can it be defective in the sealing of the camera?

    Hi, you didn’t include any dark current information in the specifications (or description) tab on this webpage, but looking in the manual I see there is a graph there. I assume the dark current (in e/pix/s) isn’t effected by the gain setting?

    Hi, is 300s dark frame linked to in the product description bias subtracted? There nothing in the FITS header to indicate that it has been but it’s not much use for measuring the dark current unless it has.

    According to the treat before, 0.0 fps – issue:
    Yes, I tried a lot of things.
    Two different USB-cables (3.0 and 2.0),
    different USB-Speed-Settings, Auto and manual,
    two different PCs, two different programs,
    over ASCOM, and the “higer compatibility mode” in APT.
    Nothing changed, all as before, then from one day to another 0,0 fps.
    I think I send it back to service.

    Yesterday may Cam was working properly.
    Today it shows “0 frames (0 dropped) in ~time~ at 0,0 fps”
    and no picture is seen, only black.
    I can change settings and it reports the temperature,
    so a connection is established and all seems to be okay.
    But no pics are coming. I tried different PCs and two programs.
    What can I do to reset it? Or is it broken?

    but the FWupdate.exe finds no camera (empty).
    Yes, VS2008 SP1 redistributable package is installed.
    I can’t find a file named ASI1600MMC.iic.
    To with of the cams is it compatible?
    In the zip-File are some inside,
    but I don’t know with one to choose.

    Hi, I have few questions:

    1. Previous version of ASI 1600MM (mono) that sells now for $990 does it have active cooling? can it be set to -10C?

    2. I plan to image simultaneously from 3 scopes, can I ran all 3 cameras on one computer (does your software/drivers support this kind of operation) or do I need 3 separate computers in this case?

    3. What size filters should be used for this camera, is filter wheel available? If no, can the camera accept FWs from other manufacturers?

      1.only cooled camera has regulated cooler, so 1600MM don’t have it
      2.yes, you can run 3 cameras on one computer
      3.there is EFWmini, you just need 1.25″ filter for F5 and slower scope, 31mm filters can support up to F2 lens

    (Remark: “ZWO” stands in german dialect for “2”, so this is a word-joke).
    If I have the 12V-Power for Cooling connected –
    is the Camera-Part still powered over USB or out of the 12V-Power?
    Meaning: If I use a 3.0-USB-Hub wothout Powersupply,
    then there is too less Power for the Camera and an external HDD.

    Hi, just received the 1600MM cool. 2 issues:

    1)The LED light does not come on, and no cooling is effected when activated (USB2 port only on my laptop on Win 7 Pro and ascom 6.2). Also, the driver version is listed as a 2014 version although i installed the latest off the ZWO website here. Is there a fault somewhere in the cooling system? How about the driver? I do see the ASI1600MM Cool listed as an imaging device, and the camera does produce images.

    2) The EFW – how do I control this? The proprietary ZWO has no EFW control. Do i have to use a third party ascom software? I use APT, but I am not sure if this camera is supported. The cooling also cannot be efffected through APT.
