Product Description

All Pro cameras (with cooler) need to be connected to an external 11-14v power supply to image.

Even when the cooler is not being used the power supply must be used for the camera to be recognized.

ASI533MC Pro

Camera Sensor

▶IMX533

1” square sensor

The IMX533 is a 1-inch, 9MP CMOS image sensor in a square format with a 3.76 um pixel size, capable of producing frames at 20 frames/sec in 14bit mode.

Read out noise is as low as 1.0e which makes it comparable to SCMOS or EMCCD sensors and highly suitable for high definition, low noise imaging.

IMX533 backlit sensor

Sony’s back-illuminated CMOS image sensor improves sensitivity and noise reduction – the key factors to enhancing image quality, while radically realigning their fundamental pixel structure from front-illumination to back-illumination. It has retained the advantages of CMOS image sensors such as low power consumption and high-speed operation.

With a conventional front-illumination structure, the metal wiring and transistors on the surface of the silicon substrate that form the sensor’s light-sensitive area (photo-diode) impede photon gathering carried out by the on-chip lens. A back-illuminated structure minimizes the degradation of sensitivity to optical angle response, while also increasing the amount of light that enters each pixel due to the lack of obstacles such as metal wiring and transistors that have been moved to the reverse of the silicon substrate.
Sony has newly developed a unique photo-diode structure and on-chip lens optimized for back-illuminated structures, that achieves a higher sensitivity and a lower random noise without light by reducing noise, dark current and defect pixels compared to the conventional front-illuminated structure.

Camera Performance

Low read-out noise, high dynamic range.

Zero Amp Glow

Traditional CMOS sensors produce a weak infrared light source during operation quite often seen in the corner of uncalibrated images as the tell tale signs of ‘amp glow’. As the ASI533MC PRO uses zero amp glow circuitry, you won’t have to worry about amp glow even when using high gain, long exposure imaging.

With amp glow – exposure 300 second exposure:

ASI533-amp glow

ASI533 frame with no amp glow – Exposure 300 seconds:

ASI533-no amp glow

Dark current

Note: We recommend using an external 12V power supply to power the camera instead of USB 3.0/2.0 only

DDR Memory Buffer

The ASI533MC PRO is equipped with a USB 3.0 interface, and even in 14bit mode, can reach 20 frames per second. The 256MB DDR3 memory ensures stable downloading of frames with increased USB speeds.

ASI533MC Pro – ASI183MC Pro Comparision

ASI533-2

The ASI533MC PRO features SONY’s latest back illuminated IMX533 sensor, with a 1-inch square, 9.07MP sensor that is ideal for astronomical photography needs and can be considered as the latest iteration of the venerable ASI183MC Pro.

As you would expect this latest generation camera not only retains key features of the ASI183 series such as an attractive QE figure, high frame rate and along with other excellent characteristics of the ASI183 cameras, but also now includes new and improved features such as zero amp glow, extreme low read out noise (as low as 1.0e), 3.76 microns pixel size and an improved 2 stage TEC cooler giving enhanced cooling capabilities.

What is in the box?

Spacer thickness: 0.1mm *1+0.2mm *2+0.5mm *1

Please notice that the camera needs to be connected to an external DC 12V @3A~5A power supply adapter for use (connector 5.5*2.1mm, center pole positive). If you don’t have one, click here to buy a 12V power adapter. There are 4 different standards for different countries, make sure you selected the correct adapter when placing the order.
Or you can also use lithium battery with 11-15V to power the camera.
Just be aware that power supplies out of this range might cause irreversible damages to your camera.

    Hi,
Just to say, I’ve bought it a few weeks ago and it’s an amazingly nice product
very nice picture, very dark background, just perfect for my setup, etiher with my 10″ newtonian or my TS72ED
    I have re-discovered the sky !
Thx a lot for creating this camera ^^

What size UV-IR cut filter should I purchase for the 533 camera – the 1.25″ or the 2″? A previous Q&A indicates a separate adapter is needed to mount the 1.25″ filter. Does the 2″ filter (48mm threads) just mount directly into one of the TS rings, and if so, where in the imaging chain should it be mounted (i.e., close to the sensor or close to the focuser)?

1.25″ UV-IR cut filter is better for ASI533MC Pro. You can use T2-1.25″ adapter(this adapter will come with the camera)
Or you can use 1.25″/31mm filter wheel. Sorry the 2″ filter can not mount into the T2 ring.

Installed ASI Studio on a 2020 MabBook Air with OSX Catalina, connected to the MacBook, and the LED on the camera turns on.

In ASICap it can select the camera but there is no image, zero frames, nothing.

In ASIImg, selecting the camera after a few seconds it shows Camera Status Exposure Error..

I have also tried connecting it to a PC with SharpCap. SharpCap does not detect the camera.

    Seem this camera is faulty.

Any ideas before I put the camera in the trash ?

Yes, it is possible. But the power of 533 is very large, so the voltage may be unstable. You could use the extra power to power the ASI533 MC.

Hi there, from the paper specs, it looks like this camera might be the perfect “crossover” camera for both planetary and DSO imaging. It’s clearly been set up as a DSO camera, that much is obvious, but its very low read noise (similar to the ASI224MC) might mean it could also be used for planetary.

On the spec sheet, you claim 116.55 fps with an ROI of 640×480 pixels at 14 bit depth, this value is very similar to that for the ASI224MC at 12 bit. Now, we planetary imagers only record in 8 bit more (hi speed) and can easily double that fps value when running in high speed mode, can you look into this and provide the fps values for the ASI533MC in 8 bit mode?

This could be the perfect “all in one” camera, you should get a dedicated planetary imager to test it out.

    Andrew

And before launching sharpcap session as i usually do, i checked if everything was ok, some frames, and ….boommmmm….

    Horizontal banding issues..

And lately i checked also all my last darks took in the afternoon and they all have banding: pronounced at unity gain, and slowly decreasing as i increase the gain.

What can i do? I feel so sad…
