Back-illuminated  CMOS Image Sensor with 14bit ADC. ASI178MM has a 1/1.8″ and 6.4M pixels sensor IMX178 with SONY STARVIS and Exmor R Technology.

Extremely low read noise(2.2e – 1.4e) , 1.44 @27db, high sensitivity and 14bit ADC make it very suitable for astronomy and microscopy high resolution photograph.

Come with a 2.5mm all sky lens which can provide a nearly 170° view of the sky.

    it seems that Sony offers only IMX178LQJ sensor that is a color version and I’m wondering how you turn this sensor in monochrome version.

      I think rolling shutter may still have problem with such very fast target such like IIS
      so ASI174 is better for this, but you can try with 178 anyway

      smaller pixel size but higher resolution

      just cannot add the EFW

      there is 1/4″ screw under the camera body, just mount it to tripod

    Hi Sam,

    how is the quantum efficiency of the ASI178mm compared to the ASI178MC? Can I compare the two graphs of the relative quantum efficiency?
    An example: At 400nm the ASI78MM has a relative quantum efficiency of 70%. The ASI178MC has a relative quantum efficiency of 46% (B), 10% (R) and 8% (G) at 400nm. The bayer matrix is made of 1 blue, 1 red and 2 green pixel. So i can add 46% + 10% + 2*8%, that gives 72%. But thats the relative quantum efficiency of 4 pixels, so 74%/4 is approximately 20% quantum efficiency per pixel at 400nm. That means, that if the ASI178MM and ASI178MC have the same absolute quantum efficiency, the ASI178MM is at 400nm more than three times more sensitive than the ASI178MC. Is this consideration right?

      usually QE of mono camera is around 10% higher than mono camera
      but color sensor don’t respond to all color
      mono sensor is around 3 times sensetive

      no, the sensor of 178mm is very small and won’t have any problem with vignetting

    But I don’t have enough knowledge to understand the camera’s performance.
    Currently, I thinking to buy ASI178MM or ASI185MC models.
    Anyway I have two questions.
    1. I want to shoot meteors and milky way. Which camera is better? color or mono? I think mono is better in terms of noise and sensitivity.
    2. I don’t have much budgets, so I think the comparatively inexpensive ASI185MC model is better to me. However, if the performance of the ASI178MM is overwhelming, then I will buy ASI178MM.
    Based on these two questions, which model would you recommend?

    The Specifications says it has a AR window but does not say if the AR window is clear or is a UV/IR cut. Does the camera come with a UV/IR filter or does it need one? I see a UV/IR Cut filter listed in Recommended Accessories.

      yes, you can control the exp and gain manually
      there is no GigE vision
      it’s CS mount come with 178
      you can use one 5mm CS-C extender to make it become C mount
